Introduction by the HOD
The Department of Pathology (Morbid Anatomy) was established in 1972 and is the pioneer department of the other diagnostic laboratories in the Ahmadu Bello University/Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria. The department has a dual role of training and rendering of clinical laboratory diagnostic services and consultation. The academic arm of the department has teaching of undergraduate medical student, pharmacy and nursing as its main role as well as university postgraduate (MSc and PhD) programmes and postgraduate residency training programme for the award of the Fellowship of the National and West African Postgraduate Medical Colleges. In the clinical services area it is responsible for the processing of tissues and smears for histopathological and cytopathological clinical laboratory diagnoses in addition to conducting autopsies (postmortem examinations).

Philosophy and Objectives
The main objective of the department is to impart the needed knowledge of pathological basis of diseases to medical students and resident doctors which will ensure the foundation of scientifically oriented skills and best practices amongst the medical practitioners and specialists. The department also aims at providing high quality clinical diagnostic services (autopsy, histopathology and cytopathology) and serves as a reference laboratory to most parts of the Northern states of Nigeria.
